Get Caught Bluffing

In poker, bluffing is a time-honored tradition. Players are expected to bluff sometimes. It’s integral to the game and provides a real thrill when a player pulls one off successfully. There’s no better feeling in poker than to take the big risk of winning a pot while holding a worthless hand.

So how often should a player bluff? There’s an old saying in poker that says if you don’t get caught bluffing sometimes, then you are not bluffing enough. And conversely, if you are getting caught on a bluff regularly, then you’re definitely bluffing too much.

The key to successful bluffing is to make your attempts are it selective and sporadic. And the one really critical factor about bluffing is that you should get caught occasionally. When you are caught trying to steal the pot, it sets up a scenario where your opponents can’t be sure if they should call your bets or not. You might be bluffing, but then again, perhaps you’re not and are really holding the nuts.

Learn to look for bluffing opportunities, such as raggy cards on the flop that probably missed everyone. Attempt a bluff when a scare card, like a third card to a flush appears, and everyone just checks. When you bluff, always do so with the knowledge you might get called and caught, so time the bluff for when you can put up a small bet and be willing to accept getting caught knowing you have set up a confusing image to your poker opponents.
