Printer manufacturers are marketing ink for exaggerated prices making running out very expensive. The problem with the current market is that the printer manufacturers don t sell their printers for what they are worth. Manufacturers would find it hard to make a gain from printer sales because of the low prices in the market. There are however, cheaper means to get printer ink. Rather than buying a makers own brand ink you can save cash by looking at buying compatible ink cartridges.

With prices so high, many customers are looking to compatible inks as a way to save money. According to The Register some brands of printer ink cost seven times more per millilitre than a bottle of Dom Perignon (1985). Other sources have showed ink to be more pricey than crude oil.

There are barriers created by the printer producers to stop users from buying compatible inks. The majority of manufacturers include electronic chips on their inks to estimate the amount of printer ink that is being used. The difficulties of making cartridges that contain chips does restrain the number of copy cartridge manufacturers. If your printer contains a chip reader you need to make sure that the cartridges you buy will work with it.

Lexmark controls its own Toner Loading Program where the company refills clients ink cartridges. Lexmark brand printers bear a technology that makes the printer inoperable when it discovers that the cartridge was not filled again by Lexmark. The legal cause for the court action was an alleged breach of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (2001). The legal struggle lasted for seven years with the outcome that the Lexmark toner loading program was judged not to be copyright-able, opening the doors for compatibles producers. After seven years of legal wrangling and appeals, Lexmark lost the action.
