John Denham, the former Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government (CLG), submitted a proposal for CLG refit at the department’s head quarters in Eland House, Victoria. This was in February. The cost of the project proposal was £2.4 million.

The proposal to refurbish the atrium came under serious scanner. While the restaurant in the ground floor posed serious fire hazards due to clogged ducts and obsolete smoke vents, the upper floors had no fire safety exits or fire extinguishers. The atrium refurbishment would only open up more paths of fire dangers that the building was not capable of handling.

Minister for Fire Services, Bob Neill expressed regret that the Labour Government responsible for the safety of the public at large was not equipped to protect its own staff. He called for a quick remedial action to set right the violations. He was optimistic that putting things in order would restore the faith and honour of the government. But the damage has been done.

Latest reports show that more than 1250 firefighters faced line of duty-attacks by the public between 2004 and 2009 in Scotland.

The numbers reveal that close to 769 firefighters worked in Strathclyde region. Another 527 firefighters that were attacked in the past five years came from other Scottish regions. Tennis balls, apples, bricks, bottles were thrown at firefighters. Verbal abuse was also seen in some cases.

Executive Council Member for Fire Brigades Union Scotland Roddy Robertson said that attacks on firefighters were inexcusable and that the high numbers were disappointing. He added that though it was mostly kids who were at the center of these attacks, involvement of adults had also been seen in some cases.

According to Strathclyde Fire & Rescue, the frequency of attacks on firefighters from Strathclyde had fallen for the third straight year. In comparison to 142 attacks between 2008 and 2009, the number had dipped to 93 between 2009 and 2010. Between 2008 and 2009, number of attacks reported was 151 while the number for 2006-2007 was 171.

The number of assaults using weapons increased from 16 to 17 between 2008 and 2010. Incidents of damaged fire equipment and appliances reduced from eight to four. Cases of verbal abuse fell to 65 from 110 while attacks using missiles were down to three from a previous eight. The last year had seen firefighters being subjected to four physical assaults by different individuals.
